Bay zones Conditions vary significantly across the bay
Richardson Bay
Sheltered waters off Sausalito. Good for beginners. Observe no-wake zones near the wildlife sanctuary.
Central Bay
Open water between SF and Angel Island. Active shipping lanes, strong afternoon winds, significant current.
Raccoon Strait
Fast tidal currents between Tiburon and Angel Island, often 3–5 knots. Time passage with the flood.
South Bay
Calmer, shallower waters near Oakland. Check charts carefully — mudflats exposed at low tide.

Skipper's guide What every Bay boater should know
01 · Shipping lanes
Give ships the right of way
Large commercial vessels cannot maneuver easily and need over a mile to stop. Never cross in front of a ship. Stay out of the main channel and monitor VHF Ch. 16 for traffic advisories.
02 · Afternoon winds
The SF Slot effect
Wind accelerates through the Golden Gate — often 20–35 knots by early afternoon. Mornings are calmer. If you're newer to the bay, plan your return before 2–3pm and check the marine forecast.
03 · Cold water
Bay water is always cold
SF Bay averages 52–58°F year-round. Cold shock and swim failure are serious risks. Wear a PFD at all times. Hypothermia can impair judgment within 30 minutes. File a float plan before every trip.
04 · Fog
Visibility can drop in minutes
SF fog can reduce visibility to under 100 feet with little warning. Know your sound signals — one prolonged blast every 2 minutes under power. Slow down, post a lookout, and never assume others see you.
05 · Tides & currents
One of the most complex systems in the US
Bay tidal currents can exceed 4 knots through the Gate and create steep chop when opposing wind. Current tables differ from tide tables — check both at tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov before departure.
06 · Safety gear
Required onboard equipment
Coast Guard requires: PFDs for all aboard, flares, VHF radio, fire extinguisher, and sound signaling device. Also bring: anchor, first aid kit, extra water, and a charged phone in a waterproof case.
